Maras Pueblo colonial que fue residencia de los descendientes de los incas de Hurin Cusco. En la época colonial llegó a ser el primer centro productor de sal de la sierra meridional, por lo que posee una buena iglesia y varias casonas cuyas fachadas lucen escudos de nobleza. Algunas de sus casonas coloniales guardan interesantes secretos. Una de ellas alberga a la familia Argandoña, dedicada al arte de la sombrerería. Otra, la de Jesusa Lucana, es conocida en toda la zona por la calidad de su chicha de jora. Cerca de Maras (Comunidad Campesina de Pichingoto) se une muran las minas de sal (llamadas localmente “salineras”), explotadas desde tiempos prehispánicos hasta la actualidad. El pataje es muy recomendable para los amantes de la fotografía. U11 sendero afirmado (ideal para Trekking y ciclismo de montaña) conecta las salineras con los poblados de Tarabamba y Pichingo! o, a algunos kilómetros de Ollantaytambo sobre el valle sagrado del Urubamba. Moray: grupo arqueológico único son terrazas o andenes agrícolas con sus canales de irrigación prototipo de invernadero o estación experimental. Ubicado a 9 km al O del pueblo de Maras por camino afirmado, y aproximadamente a 62 km al norte de la ciudad del Cusco, este conjunto arqueológico es quizás uno de los más enigmáticos del Cusco prehispánico. Compuesto por un sistema de andenes o terrazas agrícolas concéntricas que alcanzan una profundidad de 150 m, presenta muros de contención conectados por un gran sistema de irrigación. Su nombre se derivaría de las voces quechuas muyu y uray, que significan ‘redondo’ y ‘hacia abajo’, respectivamente. Se piensa que el lugar era un gran laboratorio agrícola en el que los incas lograron crear diversos microclimas para propiciar variedades de cultivos. Tanto por su interés arqueológico como por la belleza de los paisajes, ésta es una excursión muy recomendable. La ruta de acceso a Moray es algo complicada y no siempre se encuentra en buen estado (especialmente después de las lluvias), por lo que sugerimos contactar a un guía en Maras o pedir información durante el recorrido. Salineras: O minas de sal formados por 300 pozos durante la sequía se llenan con agua salada que emana de un manante natural cada 3 días, al evaporar el agua se van formando cristales de sal.
